G S Malik Named Gujarat Director General of Police

Chosen from a UPSC three-name panel, Malik assumes the state’s top police post after a six-month vacancy, known for driving large encroachment clearances, immigrant deportations, and wider community surveillance

Overview

  • The Gujarat government appointed Gyanender Singh Malik as director general of police after selecting his name from a three-name panel sent by the Union Public Service Commission under Supreme Court guidance.
  • The DGP post had been held on interim charge since the end of December 2025 after Vikas Sahay retired, and Malik’s appointment replaces that temporary arrangement.
  • As Ahmedabad police commissioner, Malik led the Chandola Lake operation that removed about 400,000 square metres of encroachments and oversaw the detention and deportation of 465 people identified as illegal immigrants.
  • Under Malik, Ahmedabad expanded community-led CCTV coverage to roughly 24,000 cameras and launched a statewide drive called Operation Delta Hunt that is reported to be ongoing.
  • Malik’s record includes senior postings in the CISF and BSF and UN peacekeeping service in Kosovo, and his elevation signals continued emphasis on enforcement-led clearances and surveillance as the state’s policing priorities.
