Fundación Bancaja Opens 'Tàpies: Última Década' With Radical Late Works

The Valencia exhibition presents 22 large-format pieces from 2002–2012, including five first-time displays from the family collection.

Overview

  • The show runs March 6 to August 30, 2026, at Fundación Bancaja in Valencia.
  • Visitors are greeted by the monumental a = a (2005), a Bancaja-owned canvas shown publicly for the first time.
  • The selection emphasizes the human body, symbols and objects, integrating materials such as wood, cloth, ropes and furniture fragments.
  • Five previously unexhibited works appear in a dark, low-lit room designed for contemplation, alongside photos of the artist’s Campins home and a 2024 documentary, Materia en forma de Tàpies.
  • Toni Tàpies and curator Fernando Castro Flórez describe the late-period pieces as radical, with the curator comparing them to Beethoven’s final quartets.
