Fugitive Arrested After Fleeing Traffic Stop in NW Miami-Dade Crash That Killed Driver

Traffic Homicide detectives have taken over the probe after the suspect was identified as a fugitive wanted for military desertion.

Overview

  • Deputies from Miami-Dade’s Robbery Intervention Detail attempted a traffic stop when the driver fled, leading to a pursuit that ended in a violent crash in northwest Miami-Dade.
  • Surveillance video and investigators say the fleeing black sedan reversed direction, ran a stop sign and struck a civilian car, which overturned and then hit an unmarked sheriff’s unit.
  • First responders extricated two civilian drivers and took them to hospital; one civilian was later pronounced dead and the other remains hospitalized, while the RID deputy was treated at the scene and released.
  • The suspect was arrested at the scene, identified as 21-year-old Luis Manuel Perez, taken for medical evaluation and booked into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center where he is being held without bond.
  • MDSO Traffic Homicide detectives are leading the ongoing investigation to reconstruct the crash, determine fault, and review whether criminal charges or departmental policy issues apply.
