Fugitive Adolfo Grosso Returned to Peru After Mexico Arrest in 2016 Police Killings

He was located in Nezahualcóyotl via an Interpol Red Notice after nearly nine years on the run.

Overview

  • Peruvian police say Adolfo Ernesto Grosso Zamora has been transferred to Lima and placed in custody to face charges of aggravated homicide and involvement in an organized criminal group.
  • Mexican authorities captured him on October 9 in the Las Maravillas area of Nezahualcóyotl during a joint operation involving Semar, SSPC, Sedena, FGR, the National Guard, INM and Interpol.
  • The case stems from a March 16, 2016 ‘marca’ robbery in Rímac in which assailants opened fire on a patrol, killing sub-officers Gustavo Romero Zevallos and Yoeen Sánchez Anaya.
  • Investigators say Grosso fled Peru the next day through Jorge Chávez airport and hid in Mexico using changing identities, leading Mexican authorities to approve his expulsion and coordinate his handover.
  • Authorities link him to Los Gatilleros del Rímac, and note that killing a police officer qualifies as aggravated homicide in Peru with potential penalties of up to 35 years or life imprisonment.
