Fuel Price Convoys Paralyze Central Dublin for Second Day

Officials warn the protests now threaten fuel deliveries and access to Dublin Airport and the Port Tunnel.

Overview

  • Following Tuesday's nationwide convoys, Wednesday's protests left O'Connell Street closed and caused severe Dublin Bus diversions and a Green Line tram shutdown through the city centre.
  • Gardaí reported vehicles left in place overnight and cautioned that road blocks could target Dublin Airport and the Port Tunnel, with fresh slow-moving convoys also seen in Cork, Limerick and Tipperary.
  • Pickets at fuel depots in Galway and Limerick and later at the Whitegate refinery in Cork disrupted deliveries, and at least one forecourt ran out of fuel even as state agencies reported normal stock levels.
  • Taoiseach Micheál Martin called the blockades wrong, warned that illegal parking will draw penalties, and said the government will work through national representative bodies rather than meet ad-hoc organisers.
  • Protesters seeking diesel price caps and tax cuts signalled a third day of action on Thursday, leaving commuters stranded and delaying some emergency responses, according to Dublin Fire Brigade and Gardaí.
