Fresh Low-Pressure System Deepens Flood Emergency in North Odisha

The new Bay of Bengal low threatens extremely heavy rain plus flash floods, raising risk to displaced people, crops, bridges.

Overview

  • Heavy monsoon rain and a depression on Aug. 13–14 sent rivers in north Odisha into spate, flooding hundreds of villages and breaching embankments.
  • By Saturday authorities said about 2.7 lakh people in 503 villages across six districts were affected and 95,206 people had been moved into 226 relief shelters.
  • The state has deployed 118 response teams including ODRAF, NDRF, fire services, medical and veterinary units to run relief camps that provide cooked food, safe drinking water and basic medical care.
  • Floods have washed away bridges, cut roads and submerged thousands of hectares of kharif farmland, threatening harvests and isolating communities that rescue teams are trying to reach.
  • The IMD and CWC issued fresh warnings after a new low‑pressure area formed over the north Bay of Bengal for Aug. 16–18, so officials remain on high alert and have ordered inquiries into an alleged unannounced release of stored water by a private hydropower company.
