Fresh Gains in Cañuelas and Jesús María Extend Argentina’s Cattle Price Rally

Tight supply from herd rebuilding is propelling live values higher and pushing beef costs up for consumers.

Overview

  • In the week’s opening run at Cañuelas, only 7,159 head were offered as the General Index rose 2.89% and the Novillo Index 1.68%, with light steers peaking at $5,500/kg and heifers up to $5,300.
  • In Jesús María, consumption categories jumped sharply week over week, with heavy light steers up 14% to $5,150/kg and 300–350 kg lots reaching $5,280/kg (+10.4%).
  • CICCRA reported January’s Mercado de Cañuelas average at $3,512.8 per kg live weight, down 1.6% month on month due to a shift in mix, while most categories posted monthly increases.
  • Since June 2025, average live prices have climbed 59.7% (35.3% in real terms), about 73% year on year, and measured at US$2.423/kg on the official rate they are up 24.5% from a year earlier.
  • INDEC data show ‘carnes y derivados’ rose 4.4% in January and 54.7% over 12 months, with beef cuts such as asado up 5.6% in the month, as meatpackers keep buying to serve domestic demand on tight margins.
