French Wine and Spirits Exports Fall 8% in 2025, Third Straight Decline

Industry leaders urge faster EU trade deals to restore market access.

Overview

  • FEVS reported export value at €14.3 billion and volumes down 3% to 168 million cases, marking a third consecutive annual drop.
  • Sales to the United States fell 21% to €3.0 billion after tariff hikes and an unfavorable euro–dollar rate, with volumes slipping below 30 million cases.
  • Shipments to China declined 20% to €767 million as anti-dumping duties curtailed cognac, armagnac and other wine-based spirits.
  • Cognac was among the hardest hit categories, with volumes down 15% and value down 24% in 2025.
  • Since 2022 export value has fallen 17% and the sector has slipped to France’s No. 3 export earner, while producers eye EU deals with India and Mercosur and growth in markets such as South Africa, where sales rose 22%.
