French Municipal First Round Delivers Left Leads in Big Cities and RN Strength in the South

Higher turnout than in 2020 sets up crowded run-offs on March 22.

Overview

  • Official commune-level results confirm a mixed first round with many municipalities short of a majority, sending qualified lists to 22 March run-offs under the 10% threshold rule.
  • Participation rose well above 2020 levels in numerous cities, with turnout at 52.1% in Nancy, 51.9% in Moulins and 56.4% in Arles.
  • Pollster estimates show the left ahead in several big cities — Emmanuel Grégoire leading in Paris — while Marseille and Lyon remain tightly contested heading into the second round.
  • The RN posted strong showings in parts of the South, with Éric Ciotti out front in Nice against Christian Estrosi in estimates and RN deputy Alexandra Masson leading the first round in Menton with 36.24%.
  • A handful of communes were decided outright, including Montreuil where Patrice Bessac won 57.72% and Le Luc where a single list headed by Dominique Lain took 100%.
