French Couple Remanded in Portugal After Two Young Brothers Found Alone on Road

Portuguese courts ordered pretrial detention as French and Portuguese officials coordinate the children’s care and repatriation.

Overview

  • The two brothers, aged four and five, were found alone on a rural road near Alcácer do Sal and taken to safety by a passing motorist before being admitted for medical observation.
  • French authorities had issued a Europe-wide search after the children’s father reported the mother and boys missing, leading to the arrest of the mother (41) and her partner (55) in Fátima, Portugal.
  • An investigating judge in Setúbal charged the pair with abandonment and endangerment and ordered pretrial detention on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, with an added aggravated-assault charge against the man.
  • The children were released from hospital into foster care and were described by Portuguese justice officials as doing well clinically while officials arrange formal repatriation to France.
  • Reporting highlights differences in the adults’ profiles: the mother recently lived in Colmar and worked in healthcare with no local social-service alerts, while the partner is a former gendarme reported to share conspiracy material and to have prior violent incidents noted by French sources.
