Frederick Richard Claims First U.S. Men's All-Around Title

He accepted repeated uniform penalties to boost visibility and has effectively secured a spot on the U.S. World Championships team in Rotterdam.

Overview

  • Richard won the all-around Saturday at the Xfinity U.S. Championships in Phoenix with a two-night total of 170.015, finishing 2.051 points ahead of Shane Wiskus.
  • He knowingly wore nonconforming shorts and compression leggings under his singlet and was penalized a total of 0.9 points across the meet, plus a 0.3 deduction for an incorrect salute on night one.
  • The title caps a comeback year for Richard after being left off some 2025 teams and makes him essentially assured of being named to the five-man U.S. roster for the World Championships in Rotterdam in October.
  • Tokyo Olympian Shane Wiskus finished second and 19-year-old Danila Leykin slipped to third after two falls on floor exercise, while pommel horse specialist Stephen Nedoroscik fell and said a left shoulder injury hurt his nationals chances.
  • Nationals results are a major input for USA Gymnastics’ selection process and Richard’s win strengthens his position as a leading veteran and public face for the U.S. men as the program shifts focus toward Rotterdam and Los Angeles 2028.
