Frankfurt Marathon Put Out to Tender After London Group Buys Longtime Organizer

The city will run a formal tender to choose who organizes the race from 2027.

Overview

  • Frankfurt’s mayor said Thursday the city will open a transparent tender for a long-term contract, setting up a choice of organizer for 2027.
  • A March 12 registry filing confirmed Motion Events was sold to London Marathon Investments, with Hugh Brasher and Jeanette Wong now listed as managing directors.
  • Founder Jo Schindler will remain through this year in a transition role and then advise the event, and Frankfurt official Holger Kranz is slated to become race director on January 1, 2027.
  • A new local bidder, the Frankfurter Sportagentur led by decathlete Andreas Bechmann, has applied to take over from 2027 with Sportkreis backing and a pledge to send 10% of any surplus to Frankfurt sport.
  • Key factors in the tender include Motion Events’ trademark rights since 2009, the annual city permit for the 42.195 km race, and how TV and sponsor support such as hr-fernsehen and Mainova are secured.
