The numbers point to a hub that pairs tough border checks with hefty tax intake.

  • The annual report from the Frankfurter Hauptzollamt lists nearly 15 tonnes of drugs worth about €190 million removed and about €18 million in undeclared cash seized.
  • Officers logged 6,089 seizures across post, freight and passenger traffic, with most narcotics sent by mail and 88 couriers arrested at Frankfurt Airport.
  • The narcotics haul included about 7.7 tonnes of cannabis, 822 kilograms of cocaine, roughly five tonnes of khat, 11,042 amphetamine or Ecstasy pills, and around 400 kilograms of new psychoactive substances such as ketamine.
  • Customs seized 28,930 protected animal and plant specimens, including 157 live animals and a renewed uptick in ivory items, with violations of CITES carrying fines up to €50,000 or possible prison time.
