France’s Category A Jobseekers Up 1.6% in Q3, Dares Reports

Dares says administrative changes inflated the headline count beyond underlying labor-market trends.

Overview

  • The number of jobseekers with no activity rose 1.6% from Q2 and 7.6% year-on-year, reaching 3.26 million in category A and nearly 5.7 million across categories A, B and C.
  • The published totals include automatic registrations of RSA recipients and youths in insertion pathways; excluding these additions, the rise would have been 0.7% quarter-on-quarter and 6.3% year-on-year.
  • A June overhaul of the sanctions regime that prioritizes suspension-remobilization over removals reduced radiations and lifted recorded unemployment.
  • Dares estimates that without the June decree, Q3 registrants would have fallen by about 1% in category A and by 0.3% across A, B and C.
  • The Ministry of Labour published the figures on Tuesday, Oct. 28, and the government described the economic situation as deteriorating.
