Overview
- Assurance Maladie reports 764 fatal workplace accidents in 2024 within 1,297 work-related deaths overall, including 318 commuting fatalities and 215 from occupational diseases.
- Recorded workplace accidents fell 1.1% to 549,614 cases, or 26.4 per 1,000 employees, even as the number of deaths rose by five from 2023 and by 26 from 2022.
- Risk is concentrated in construction (about one in five deaths), transport and logistics, metallurgy, and a rising toll in the food industry.
- More than 20% of fatal accidents occurred within a year of hiring, and for employees under 25 more than half of deaths happened in that first year.
- Occupational diseases increased 6.7%—with musculoskeletal disorders (+6.6%), asbestos-related illnesses (+8.5%) and psychological conditions (+9%)—and deaths from on-site medical events included since 2018 now account for over half of recorded fatalities.
