France Signals Possible Probes as Epstein Files Highlight Jack Lang Family’s Offshore Links

France’s justice minister says prosecutors will examine the U.S. trove if the records show offences.

Overview

  • Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin said Wednesday that French prosecutors could open investigations if the newly posted documents contain evidence of crimes.
  • Jack Lang told RTL he fears nothing and reiterates he knew nothing of Epstein’s crimes, after earlier saying he “assumes” his past ties to the financier.
  • The released files include a 2015 email in which Lang quotes a €5.4 million “offshore” price for a Marrakech riad and records of Prytanee LLC, an offshore art-buying vehicle formed in 2016 with Caroline Lang.
  • Caroline Lang resigned from the independent producers’ union and acknowledged not declaring the offshore company; she is also named for a $5 million bequest in Epstein’s 2019 testament, which she says she did not know about.
  • The U.S. Department of Justice says it does not plan new prosecutions despite releasing millions of pages, videos and photos, and coverage cautions that being named in the files does not in itself indicate wrongdoing.
