France Sets June 23 Panthéon Ceremony for Historian and Resistance Fighter Marc Bloch

His family has asked the Élysée to bar the far right from the ceremony.

Overview

  • The presidency confirmed Marc Bloch will enter the Panthéon on June 23, 82 years after his execution by the Gestapo.
  • An initial target of June 16 was shifted because the G7 will be held in Évian-les-Bains from June 15 to 17.
  • In a letter seen by AFP, Bloch’s relatives requested the exclusion of the far right from any participation in the event.
  • President Emmanuel Macron first announced the pantheonization in November 2024 in Strasbourg, citing Bloch’s work, teaching and courage.
  • Bloch, a Jewish Alsatian medievalist and cofounder of the Annales school, joined the Resistance, was arrested in Lyon on March 8, 1944, tortured at Montluc prison and shot on June 16, 1944.
