France Seeks to Block Kanye West’s Marseille Concert

The review tests France’s narrow rules for canceling shows on public-order grounds.

Overview

  • Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, described by his office as very determined on Tuesday, is exploring every legal option to stop the June 11 show at Marseille’s Orange Vélodrome.
  • The concert remains on the calendar for June 11, and Nuñez has consulted regional prefect Jacques Witkowski and Mayor Benoît Payan, who says West is not welcome in the city.
  • Officials point to West’s antisemitic conduct, including a 2025 track titled Heil Hitler and sales of a T-shirt with a swastika, which led major platforms to remove the song.
  • The United Kingdom blocked West’s entry in early April, prompting London’s Wireless Festival to cancel after sponsors such as Pepsi and Diageo withdrew support.
  • French law permits banning a concert only if speech at the event could be criminal or if public order is at risk, while elsewhere in Europe the response differs, with Dutch authorities saying there are no current plans to bar him.
