France Reports 64% Jump in Sports Violence Cases in 2025

Officials say wider background checks, including for e-sport, could better protect children.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Sports said the Signal-Sports platform logged 872 reports in 2025, up from 532 in 2024 and 363 in 2023, after a new rule required sports venues to post how to report abuses.
  • About 60% of the cases involved sexist or sexual violence, with 67% of victims minors and 40% under age 15, and women making up 57% of victims overall and 77% in sexual cases.
  • Of 936 people accused, 693 were sports educators such as coaches or trainees, and 91% of those accused were men, according to the ministry.
  • Authorities responded with 206 emergency prefect orders, 58 lasting administrative decisions, 184 disciplinary actions by federations, and 10 court-ordered bans on practicing.
  • Separately, 941 people were removed from roles under France’s honorability background check system, and the child welfare chief urged extending those checks to all child-facing sectors, including e-sport.
