France Reports 2,489 Anti-Religious Acts in 2025 as Anti-Muslim Violence Surges, Antisemitism Eases Slightly

The Interior Ministry pledged to convene national and local meetings to counter these offenses but set no timetable.

Overview

  • Total incidents stayed near 2024 levels at 2,489, including 1,320 antisemitic acts (down 16% but still historically high), 326 anti-Muslim acts (up 88%), and 843 anti-Christian acts (up 9%).
  • Antisemitic acts made up 53% of all antireligious incidents, and people were the primary targets in two-thirds of these cases.
  • Anti-Muslim incidents were 64% assaults, verbal abuse, or online hate, while anti-Christian acts were mostly property damage (87%) even as assaults rose 70% and the year included the killing of Ashur Sarnaya.
  • The ministry also cited the murders of Aboubakar Cissé in Gard and Hichem Miraoui in Var as emblematic of the year’s violence.
  • Officials reaffirmed plans for national and territorial assises, as Jewish and Muslim groups flagged likely underreporting, cited anti-Israeli rhetoric in many cases, and warned of growing social and professional exclusion.
