France Moves on Series of Partner-Violence Cases as Cambrai Ex-Husband Is Charged

Prosecutors cite prior convictions plus autopsy findings to justify tougher custody measures across several regions.

Overview

  • Cambrai (Nord): a 53-year-old was indicted and remanded after his 56-year-old ex-wife was found with knife wounds and signs of strangulation; an autopsy cited asphyxia from cervical violence and massive hemorrhage, and the case was transferred to the Douai prosecutor’s office.
  • Compiègne (Oise): a 29-year-old ex-partner was placed under formal investigation for attempted assassination and jailed after allegedly bringing a jerrycan of petrol, a lighter and a knife, with prior convictions for violence with a weapon noted by the prosecutor.
  • Le Havre (Seine-Maritime): a 47-year-old, under a contact ban following a recent conviction, forced entry and set himself on fire in front of his ex-partner and their 16-year-old daughter; his condition is described as very serious and an inquiry was opened for endangerment, aggravated assault and unlawful entry.
  • Charente (Brillac): a British resident reported shooting his wife, prompting a judicial investigation for murder; a shotgun was seized, the forensic doctor noted two ballistic wounds, an autopsy was ordered and the prosecutor sought pretrial detention.
  • Near Saumur (Maine-et-Loire): three suspects, including the ex-partner of the victim’s companion, were arrested after a man in his thirties was beaten, abducted and abandoned naked in a wood, with gendarmes pursuing counts including home invasion, kidnapping and violence with a weapon.
