France Jobless Registrations Fall in Q1 as Category A Drops 2.4%

Agencies urge caution over volatile counts shaped by recent administrative rule changes.

Overview

  • France Travail and Dares, which published figures Tuesday, reported a 2.4% quarterly fall in category A jobseekers on a like-for-like basis.
  • Using the series that includes automatic RSA enrollment and a new sanctions regime, category A fell 1.2% in France excluding Mayotte.
  • Across categories A, B, and C, the quarter saw a 1.3% drop on a like-for-like basis, versus 0.3% on the adjusted count.
  • The agencies said the decline may reflect a rebound after a sharp rise in late 2025 and warned against overinterpreting quarterly swings.
  • Insee projects unemployment will keep rising because weak hiring cannot offset a larger labor force following the 2023 pension reform.
