France Investigates Two Weekend Family Shootings Linked to Separations

Officials are examining how a municipal officer kept his service gun at home.

Overview

  • In Villers-en-Arthies on Saturday, a municipal police officer is suspected of shooting his ex-partner and their children, ages 9 and 13, before killing himself.
  • In Blénod-lès-Pont-à-Mousson overnight to Sunday, a 7-year-old was killed, his teenage brother was shot and survived, and their father died by suicide.
  • The wounded teenager is now out of danger after surgery, prosecutors in Nancy said Monday night.
  • Prosecutors opened separate criminal probes, assigning the Val-d'Oise case to gendarmerie investigators in Pontoise and Versailles and the Meurthe-et-Moselle case to the Pont-à-Mousson police for attempted assassination and intentional killing of a minor.
  • Authorities say both attacks occurred during separations, autopsies and forensic work continue, and schools and towns have set up counseling while investigators review why a municipal officer had his service weapon at home, which municipal rules prohibit.
