France Honors Fallen UN Peacekeeper After Second Death From Lebanon Ambush

A Lebanese probe is under way after French and UN officials attributed the ambush to Hezbollah.

Overview

  • The UN Interim Force in Lebanon, which monitors the Israel–Lebanon ceasefire, saw a patrol ambushed Saturday in the south that killed Sgt. Florian Montorio and wounded three others.
  • President Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday that Cpl. Anicet Girardin, 31, died in France after being repatriated Tuesday with grave wounds.
  • The defense ministry said the team was clearing a booby-trapped route when gunmen opened fire at very close range and Girardin was hit while aiding his element leader.
  • France and the UN blame Hezbollah for the attack, the group denies it, and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam says he is personally overseeing police inquiries to identify suspects.
  • France held a national tribute Thursday in Montauban for Montorio, the third French service member killed since late February in the wider war that Paris says it is not part of.
