France Holds Suspected Russian ‘Ghost Fleet’ Tanker Deyna Off Marseille Under Prosecutor Control

Investigators are examining a suspected false flag to enforce EU sanctions.

Overview

  • The Deyna arrived off Marseille-Fos on Monday and was placed at the disposal of the Marseille public prosecutor under a preliminary investigation for alleged flag irregularities.
  • The 250-meter tanker, which departed Murmansk and was sailing under a Mozambican flag, was intercepted Friday south of the Balearic Islands and boarded by helicopter-borne French personnel.
  • After a naval escort, the vessel is now under gendarmerie surveillance with exclusion zones set at 500 meters at sea and 1.5 nautical miles or 1,000 feet in the air.
  • French authorities said the operation involved allied cooperation, including the United Kingdom’s monitoring support.
  • This marks France’s third such action after the Grinch paid a multimillion-euro fine under a plea procedure and the Boracay case led to prosecution of its captain, as EU sanctions target roughly 598 suspected ghost-fleet ships.
