Overview
- France’s consumer watchdog DGCCRF fined Boohoo €2.3 million after finding misleading discounting and improper product descriptions on the retailer’s French website.
- The regulator analysed a sample of listings and found 95% did not comply with rules, including 40% that showed no price reduction, 7% with smaller discounts than advertised, and 48% where prices rose before a sale.
- Investigators also found banned terms such as “leather” or “suede” used to describe synthetic items, breaching French clothes and footwear labelling requirements.
- Boohoo said the breaches dated from October 2023 to February 2024 under previous management, that the issues are resolved, and that it cooperated with the DGCCRF while reviewing pricing and labeling practices.
- The penalty follows a sustained French crackdown on fast‑fashion platforms and follows earlier large fines for other firms, underscoring growing scrutiny of cross‑border online retailers and the way they advertise discounts.
