France Detains Sanctioned Tanker Tagor in Atlantic

The seizure signals tougher Western action to choke off revenue from Russia's shadow fleet, with the tanker now under French legal control for inspection and prosecution.

Overview

  • French naval forces intercepted and detained the oil tanker Tagor on Monday in international waters more than 400 nautical miles west of Brittany with aerial support from the UK, and the ship is being escorted to an anchorage for further checks.
  • Sanctions listings and registries show Tagor (IMO 9282481) was added to U.S. lists in July 2025, the EU in October 2025, and the U.K. in February 2026 for transporting Russian oil.
  • Boarding teams reported evidence that the vessel improperly flew a Cameroonian flag, and the Maritime Prefecture referred the case to the Brest prosecutor for legal review and possible action.
  • Authorities say Tagor sailed from the Murmansk area toward Limbe in western Cameroon, had 23 crew on board, and repeatedly changed flags — including a recent AIS transmission near Norway under a Madagascar flag — a pattern used to evade sanctions.
  • The Tagor action is the fourth French interdiction of ships tied to Russia's so-called shadow fleet and may prompt wider EU listings and closer Western maritime coordination as legal and evidentiary hurdles determine final outcomes for seized vessels.
