France Car Sales Slip in November as Electric Share Hits Record 26%

Policy incentives drove a surge in battery‑electric registrations.

Overview

  • Industry group PFA counted 132,927 new passenger cars in November, down 0.3% year on year and about 23% below the same month in 2019.
  • Battery‑electric vehicles took roughly 26% of November registrations, supported by the October relaunch of the state‑aided social leasing program and a rule that corporate fleets include at least 20% EVs.
  • Across the first 11 months, registrations fell 4.9%, with hybrids at 50.4% of the market, petrol at 21.6% and diesel near 5%.
  • Stellantis’ registrations declined 5.5% in November to a 23% share, while Renault (including Dacia) led with about 26.6%, and the Renault R5 is the best‑selling EV year to date.
  • The European Commission plans sector support measures on December 10 as the 2035 combustion‑car sales ban faces renewed scrutiny, with German chancellor Friedrich Merz calling for a review and Stellantis’ CEO welcoming revisions.
