France Bans Crinon After Olympic Fight as IIHF Clears Both Players

France’s federation cited the defenseman’s conduct leaving the ice, and IIHF rules treat fighting as an ejection without an automatic suspension.

Overview

  • Tom Wilson and Pierre Crinon were ejected late in Canada’s 10–2 win over France after receiving two minutes for roughing, five for fighting and game misconducts under IIHF rules.
  • The altercation followed Crinon’s high hit on Nathan MacKinnon earlier in the third period; MacKinnon remained in the game and teammates praised Wilson for responding.
  • Elliotte Friedman reported there will be no supplemental discipline from the IIHF, clearing Wilson for Canada’s quarterfinal and initially leaving Crinon eligible for France’s qualifying game.
  • France’s Ice Hockey Federation then removed Crinon from further Olympic participation, citing “provocative” behavior as he left the ice and a violation of the Olympic spirit.
  • The fight was a rare Olympic occurrence with NHL players back in the Games, and Wilson logged a goal and an assist to complete a Gordie Howe hat trick before his ejection.
