France and Canada Open Consulates in Nuuk, Greenland

The new posts signal support for Greenland’s and Denmark’s territorial integrity in response to renewed U.S. pressure.

Overview

  • France installed Jean-Noël Poirier as consul-general, making it the first European Union country to establish a consulate-general in Greenland.
  • Canadian foreign minister Anita Anand and Governor General Mary Simon inaugurated Canada’s mission in Nuuk and held talks with Danish and Greenlandic counterparts on Arctic security.
  • Both countries say the offices will serve their citizens and expand cooperation on culture, science, commerce, governance, and security.
  • The French and Canadian consulates are subordinate to their respective embassies in Copenhagen.
  • The moves follow President Donald Trump’s renewed push for U.S. control or expanded access to the island, tariff threats against European allies, and ongoing technical security talks among the United States, Denmark, and Greenland.
