Framework Brings OCuLink eGPU Dev Kit to the Laptop 16

The enthusiast kit exposes a 128Gbps PCIe x8 link to promote OCuLink as an open eGPU option.

Overview

  • Framework announced an OCuLink Dev Kit for the modular Laptop 16 that enables external GPUs and other PCIe cards over a direct PCIe link to the CPU.
  • The kit has three parts: an Expansion Bay board that adds an OCuLink port on the laptop, a dock that runs Framework’s swappable graphics modules outside the chassis, and a PCIe dock that takes full desktop GPUs with a separate power supply.
  • The connection exposes the full 8‑lane OCuLink interface at up to 128Gbps, and Framework says this can deliver desktop‑like PCIe performance with little overhead compared with typical eGPU setups.
  • Framework frames the package for enthusiasts, noting no power or USB travels over the cable, hot‑plugging is limited, and users should shut down before connecting or disconnecting devices.
  • Prices are not yet set and parts are slated to ship this year, the kit only works with the Laptop 16, and coverage says the move could lift OCuLink’s profile as a credible alternative to Thunderbolt eGPU docks.
