FPIs Return With Rs 19,675 Crore Early-February Buying Before IT Rout Flips Month Negative

Softer US inflation helped revive risk appetite for Indian equities.

  • Depository data show foreign portfolio investors bought Rs 19,675 crore of equities in the first half of February through February 13.
  • Despite the early purchases, FPIs were net sellers by Rs 1,374 crore for February to date as of February 13.
  • On February 13, FPIs offloaded Rs 7,395 crore as the Nifty 50 fell 336 points in a broad market decline.
  • Selling was concentrated in information technology stocks, with the IT index down 8.2% in the week ended February 13 during the so-called “Anthropic shock.”
  • Year to date, FPIs have withdrawn about Rs 1.66 lakh crore, following net outflows of Rs 35,962 crore in January, Rs 22,611 crore in December and Rs 3,765 crore in November.
