Overview
- Typhoon Narra made landfall on Hainan after lingering in the Beibu Gulf and has prompted tens of thousands of evacuations and business and tourist closures in Hainan and Guangxi.
- Typhoon Saudel struck Okinawa and the Amami islands, causing minor injuries, power outages for more than 30,000 homes, and around 150 flight cancellations in the region.
- Chinese meteorological models project Saudel will move west across the East China Sea and could make landfall between Zhejiang and Fujian, raising new flood and coastal surge risks there.
- Heavy, prolonged rain from the storms has pushed rivers above warning levels in parts of southern China and produced landslide warnings and large rainfall totals in Japan’s Amami region.
- The simultaneous presence of Narra, Saudel, Gaenari and Atsani complicates forecasts and emergency response and increases the risk of sustained transport, power and infrastructure disruption for vulnerable communities.
