Four SUVs Secure Five-Star ANCAP Safety Ratings
Testing under ANCAP’s outgoing 2023–2025 protocol shows manufacturers are pairing stronger crash protection with more capable collision-avoidance systems.
Overview
- ANCAP awarded five-star ratings to the Mazda CX-5, MG S6 EV, BMW X3 and updated Cupra Formentor after assessments under the 2023–2025 protocol.
- The 2026 Mazda CX-5 scored 155.5 out of 170 points with an average of 90.25% and a regime-high 93% for vulnerable road user protection, driven by its pedestrian- and cyclist-focused front-end and effective AEB performance.
- The MG S6 EV posted a 92% adult occupant protection score and achieved full points for driver protection in full-width and side-impact tests, reflecting strong crash compatibility and child protection results.
- The BMW X3 earned five stars across petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid variants by delivering top marks for lane-keep assist and robust autonomous emergency braking performance that included good motorcycle detection.
- The Cupra Formentor’s five-star rating applies to Australian-delivered cars built from December 2025 but excludes VZ5 and Extreme Package variants because Sabelt sports bucket seats prevent fitment of the centre airbag, and ratings may differ under ANCAP’s new 2026–28 regime.
