Four Mountain Bongos Return to Kenya to Boost Species Recovery

The transfer adds fresh bloodlines to a Kenyan program preparing captive herds for release.

Overview

  • Four male mountain bongos landed in Nairobi on a KLM cargo flight, in the third recent repatriation received by senior Kenyan officials.
  • After quarantine and acclimatisation, the antelopes will move to Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy to breed under the national recovery plan.
  • Safari Park Dvůr Králové led the operation with Europe’s zoo network, drawing the males from zoos in Frankfurt, Givskud, Bojnice and Prague.
  • The quartet was selected under the European Endangered Species Programme using age, behavior, genetic representation and mean kinship criteria after health screening.
  • Kenya estimates fewer than 100 remain in the wild, and conservationists say restoring bongos supports mountain forests that feed the country’s water supply.
