Four Dead After Clandestine Fuel-Theft Tunnel Collapses in Acolman

Federal prosecutors now lead the case over a suspected tap on a Pemex pipeline.

Overview

  • Rescuers recovered four bodies Monday afternoon after a tunnel collapsed under a home in Ejidos de Santa Catarina, Acolman, following relatives’ missing-person reports.
  • Authorities say the passage was roughly 100 meters long and aimed at the Tuxpan–Azcapotzalco pipeline, where crews found hoses and fuel extraction equipment.
  • Soldiers activated Plan DN-III as the Army, National Guard, state and municipal police, Protección Civil, the Red Cross, and Pemex specialists secured the site and directed the search.
  • The federal attorney general’s office took over the criminal inquiry, autopsies are underway at the forensic service, and officials have not reported any arrests.
  • The same area recorded two tunnel deaths in March 2024, and Pemex counted 10,027 illegal taps in the State of Mexico from 2018 to 2023, including 1,102 in Acolman.
