Four Charged Over Alleged Labour Database Tampering in Croydon East Selection

The case tests how parties protect member data during internal contests.

Overview

  • Prosecutors authorised charges Tuesday after a Met Cyber Crime Unit probe into claims a Labour database was altered to sway the Croydon East candidate race.
  • Joel Bodmer, Shila Bodmer, Gabriel Leroy and former councillor Carole Bonner face counts of conspiracy and computer misuse, with Joel Bodmer also accused of perverting the course of justice.
  • Complaints said member phone numbers were changed and fake emails were added, which blocked some hopefuls from reaching voters who decide selections.
  • Labour said it ran an internal inquiry, referred the matter to police once it found potential criminality, and suspended all four while the case proceeds.
  • The defendants are due at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 19 May, following a 2023 pause of the selection and a Met investigation that began in March 2024.
