Fossil Hunter Finds Swimmer’s Lost Prosthetic Leg 10 Months Later on Yorkshire Coast

A social media post enabled identification and the bespoke swim limb is now being repaired for return.

Overview

  • Brenda Ogden, 69, lost her custom-made waterproof prosthetic when a wave knocked it off at Bridlington in April 2025.
  • Elizabeth Forbes, a 38-year-old fossil hunter, spotted the limb among rocks near Atwick on the Holderness coast about 12–14.5 miles from where it was lost.
  • Forbes photographed the find and shared it online, leading community members to identify it as Ogden’s missing leg.
  • A friend retrieved the prosthesis at low tide and is cleaning and repairing it before it is returned to Ogden.
  • Ogden, who had been unable to replace the specialist limb after a fundraiser fell short, says she hopes to resume sea swimming.
