Fortuin Named Proteas Limited-Overs Captain as 15-Player Squad Is Announced

Shukri Conrad says the selection aims to give young players international experience to reduce senior workloads before the Australia series and World Cup build-up.

Overview

  • The South Africa selection panel on Tuesday named a 15-player limited-overs squad led by spinner Bjorn Fortuin to play a T20 tri-series and three ODIs in Namibia.
  • The squad will contest T20s against Namibia and Zimbabwe in Windhoek from August 28 to September 6 and then play three one-day internationals against Namibia.
  • Five players received first international or first ODI call-ups, including Duan Jansen and Eathan Bosch who earned maiden senior selections and Connor Esterhuizen, Jordan Hermann and Nqobani Mokoena who got their first ODI nods.
  • Coach Shukri Conrad said the single-squad approach is intended to blood young talent and rest experienced players because of a packed late-season schedule that includes an Australia series.
  • The tour doubles as a development and evaluation chance for squad depth ahead of next year’s World Cup and features what the board described as South Africa’s first-ever ODI series with Namibia, offering new players valuable caps and match exposure.
