- The City of Fort Worth and the Estate of Atatiana Jefferson announced the proposed $11.25 million settlement on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026 to resolve remaining civil claims from Jefferson’s 2019 killing.
- Large portions of the payout are earmarked for Jefferson’s two nephews and will be placed in trust accounts to be held until each nephew reaches age 18.
- The agreement will be presented to the Fort Worth City Council for consideration on Aug. 25 and would still need sign-off from a probate court before the settlement becomes final.
- The civil deal follows the 2022 manslaughter conviction and prison sentence of former officer Aaron Dean and a separate $3.5 million city payment approved in 2023 for Zion Carr, the nephew who witnessed the shooting.
- City leaders and Jefferson’s family framed the settlement as a form of accountability and a step toward closure while stressing that neither money nor convictions can undo the loss and that advocacy work honoring her legacy will continue.
