Former RCom Executive Amitabh Jhunjhunwala Remanded to CBI Custody

The agency says custodial questioning is needed to trace alleged diversion of syndicated loans that left SBI and other public lenders facing large losses.

Overview

  • A special CBI court in Mumbai remanded Amitabh Jhunjhunwala to the agency’s custody until June 5 after the CBI sought time for detailed interrogation of the former RCom group managing director.
  • Jhunjhunwala was produced from Tihar Jail to Mumbai on a production warrant, formally arrested by the CBI after transit formalities and presented before Special Judge J. P. Darekar.
  • The CBI says Jhunjhunwala ran corporate finance and bank dealings at Reliance Communications and can give leads on how loan proceeds were used, while his defence noted a chargesheet had already been filed that did not name him.
  • The case began on an SBI complaint that alleged a ₹2,929.05 crore loss to the bank and investigators say total exposure across lenders is about ₹19,694.33 crore from loans sanctioned by a consortium of public sector banks.
  • Investigations by the CBI and a parallel Enforcement Directorate money‑laundering probe remain open, and authorities say custodial questioning could identify beneficiaries, tie funds to letters of credit or widen the list of accused.
