Former NSW MP Rory Amon's Trial Opens on Child Sex Charges

The defence says he held an honest, reasonable belief the complainant was at least 16.

Overview

  • Prosecutors told the NSW Supreme Court jury Amon met the then-13-year-old on a gay hook-up site in 2017 before moving chats to Snapchat.
  • The Crown alleges two encounters in a small communal bathroom at the boy’s Northern Beaches apartment block, with sexual activity described in detail.
  • Amon has pleaded not guilty to 10 counts, including five of sexual intercourse with a child aged 10 to 14 and two of attempted sexual intercourse with a child.
  • The complainant allegedly lied about his age to join the app and is expected to say he told Amon he was 15, while the defence disputes there were two meetings and questions the platform used.
  • Jurors heard the boy disclosed concerns to school staff in 2017, made a formal police report in June 2022, police first spoke to Amon in March 2024, and he was arrested months later during a two-week jury trial before Acting Justice Robert Allan Hulme.
