Overview
- Jeannie Norris, who led Miss Hall’s School from 1996 to 2012, was indicted Wednesday on one count of reckless endangerment of a child for allegedly failing to protect students from a predatory teacher.
- Earlier this year a grand jury indicted former teacher Matthew Rutledge on three counts of rape stemming from allegations by two former students and he has pleaded not guilty.
- A 60-page independent report commissioned by the school documented multiple firsthand accounts of grooming, sexual advances and forced sexual acts and concluded leaders repeatedly failed to investigate or remove Rutledge.
- Former students Hilary Simon and Melissa Fares publicly disclosed abuse in 2024, testified to a grand jury and have pushed prosecutors and the school to pursue accountability for both the teacher and administrators.
- Berkshire District Attorney Timothy J. Shugrue said prosecutors, Massachusetts State Police detectives and victim-witness advocates are continuing the investigation, are seeking additional witnesses and have indicated further charges or developments are possible.
