Former Garda Jailed for Six Years Over Fatal Hit-and-Run

The sentence underscores a breach of policing standards by a serving Garda and shows the death was preventable.

Overview

  • Dundalk Circuit Court sentenced Michael Ball to a total of six years’ imprisonment with the final 12 months suspended, backdated to when he entered custody, and disqualified him from driving for 12 years.
  • Ball pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of 45-year-old hurling coach Niall MacEneaney and to failing to remain at the scene after striking him on Rathmullen Road.
  • Garda evidence presented in court relied on CCTV, speed calculations and forensic analysis that showed Ball had been drinking and was travelling about 107–110km/h in a 50km/h zone immediately before the collision.
  • Investigators found the victim at the scene, recovered Ball’s licence plate nearby, and later located Ball asleep and clearly intoxicated at a home where he had been staying with colleagues.
  • The court heard a victim-impact statement from MacEneaney’s wife describing the loss as senseless and preventable, and Judge Dara Hayes said Ball’s conduct fell far short of the standards expected of a member of An Garda Síochána, raising issues of accountability and public trust.
