Overview
- Piero Fusaro, who died Friday at 88 after a long illness, led Ferrari from 1989 to 1991.
- An electrical engineer from the Politecnico di Torino, he joined Fiat in 1963 and in 1975 Enzo Ferrari put him in charge of Ferrari’s general management.
- Under his presidency Ferrari finished third in the 1989 constructors’ standings, second in 1990, and third in 1991.
- Contemporary accounts say he blocked Ayrton Senna’s 1991 move to Ferrari to avoid unsettling Alain Prost, a version attributed to then team boss Cesare Fiorio that Fusaro later denied.
- His spell concluded with Prost’s departure and Luca Cordero di Montezemolo taking over in late 1991, and reports say Ferrari’s finances were strong when Fusaro left.
