Former Austria Goalkeeper Alexander Manninger, 48, Killed in Train Collision Near Salzburg

Authorities have launched a forensic review to determine what went wrong at the unprotected rail crossing.

Overview

  • Manninger’s VW minivan was hit by a Salzburger Lokalbahn near the Pabing stop around 8:20 a.m. Thursday, and he died at the scene.
  • First responders pulled him from the vehicle and used a defibrillator, but efforts to revive him failed.
  • Police said he was the only person in the car, and roughly 25 passengers plus the train driver were uninjured.
  • The public prosecutor appointed expert Gerhard Kronreif to examine the car’s electronic data and to verify whether the crossing’s warning signal operated correctly.
  • Clubs and former teammates, including the ÖFB, FC Augsburg and Gianluigi Buffon, paid tribute to the 33-cap international as investigators plan an autopsy and witness interviews.
