Former Air Canada Captain Charged After Allegedly Flying 900 Flights Without Required Licence

Police say the case reveals weaknesses in how licences are checked and could force tighter verification by airlines and regulators.

Overview

  • Peel Regional Police arrested Geoffrey Wall on June 1 and have charged him with seven counts including fraud, uttering forged documents, possession of counterfeit marks and public mischief; he is due to appear in Brampton court on June 29.
  • Investigators allege Wall commanded roughly 900 domestic and international flights between 2009 and 2025 while using materially altered or counterfeit documents to hide that he never held an Airline Transport Pilot Licence.
  • Air Canada removed the pilot from duty, voluntarily reported the findings to Transport Canada, said it completed an internal audit that found no other licence problems and confirmed the pilot was fined by the regulator.
  • Authorities and safety experts note the difference between recurrent competency checks and the statutory Airline Transport Pilot Licence requirement that the accused allegedly bypassed, and they say safety checks do not replace formal licence verification.
  • The probe began after a routine credential review at Pearson Airport in March 2025 led Transport Canada to refer the matter to police in an inquiry called Project Icarus, and the case is expected to prompt reviews of how airlines and regulators authenticate original licence documents.
