Ford Recalls Nearly 4.4 Million U.S. Vehicles Over Trailer-Towing Software Flaw

A free over-the-air update begins March 17 for most models.

Overview

  • The recall covers 2021–2026 F-150; 2022–2026 F-250 Super Duty, Expedition, Maverick and Lincoln Navigator; 2024–2026 Ranger; and 2026 E-Transit.
  • Ford says a software vulnerability in the Integrated Trailer Module can trigger a startup race condition that cuts communication to a connected trailer, disabling its lights and, on some configurations, its brakes, with dashboard fault messages displayed.
  • The action includes about 4,380,609 vehicles in the U.S. plus roughly 590,191 in Canada, and Ford estimates about 1% of the population may exhibit the defect.
  • NHTSA warns that inoperable trailer lighting and braking reduce driver control and violate federal lighting standards, while Ford reports no known crashes or injuries and about 407 related incident reports.
  • Owner notifications and VIN lookup are set for March 17, with updates available over the air or at dealers and full OTA deployment targeted by May.
