Ford Makes 7.3-Liter V8 Standard, Drops Two Lower-Output Super Duty Engines for 2027

The shift raises base power across the lineup.

Overview

  • Ford confirmed it will simplify the 2027 Super Duty by removing the 6.8-liter gas V8 and the standard-output 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel, making the 7.3-liter gas V8 the base engine.
  • The high-output 6.7-liter Power Stroke becomes the only diesel option, rated at 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque.
  • The move boosts the base gas truck’s output, as the discontinued 6.8-liter made 405 hp and 445 lb-ft while the 7.3-liter makes 430 hp and 485 lb-ft.
  • A Ford spokesperson said the change reflects customer demand for the brand’s most capable engines and is meant to protect Super Duty’s capability lead.
  • Diesel buyers could pay more at entry, since the high-output unit previously cost about $2,500 more than the dropped standard-output version.
