Footscray Brothel Death Case Confronts Conflicting Forensics at Committal Hearing

The magistrate will decide next week if the contested evidence clears the bar for a Supreme Court trial.

Overview

  • Michael James Chalmers, 36, is charged with rape and murder over the death of a 62-year-old brothel owner found at Rainbow Garden in Footscray in late November 2024.
  • Forensic pathologist Joanne Ho testified the cause of death was unascertained, though injuries were suggestive of possible asphyxia from strangulation or smothering.
  • Senior pathologist Joanna Glengarry told the court she believes the woman died from broad neck compression, smothering or gagging.
  • The defence questioned police about hallway-only CCTV, 13 clients attending in the prior week with statements taken from just one, and untested bloodied sheets from the bedroom.
  • The hearing was adjourned for written submissions and will resume Monday, when Magistrate Vincenzo Caltabiano will rule on committal to the Supreme Court.
